The Sindh Government has been focusing on renewable energy initiatives, and one of its key projects is the solarization of public buildings in Karachi with the assistance of World Bank’s Technical Team.
On Tuesday, Chief Minister Sindh Syed Murad Ali Shah inaugurated solar energy systems at key public institutions. Dow University Hospital, Ojha Campus was equipped with a 2.32MW solar power system at a cost of Rs290 million, ensuring long-term savings. Another solar system inaugurated at central jail Karachi was installed with a 614.8KW for Rs216 million, providing surplus energy to the KE Grid. The project is expected to recover its cost within three years, saving Rs64.26 million annually.
This initiative aligns with Pakistan’s broader goals to promote clean energy, reduce reliance on fossil fuels, and mitigate the impact of energy shortages. The solarization project in Karachi includes government offices, educational institutions, hospitals, and other public buildings, aiming to transition them to sustainable energy sources.
No doubt such initiatives in metropolis will reduce energy cost, environmental impact, energy independence, government and public partnership collaboration and pilot program in Karachi.
The solarization project is part of Sindh’s contribution to the national renewable energy goals set by Pakistan, which aims to have 30% of its energy mix from renewables by 2030. This move is also expected to inspire private sector involvement and increase the adoption of solar energy solutions across Karachi’s urban landscape.
