Lawyers Go Green — Zubair Ahmed Abro Wins Sindh Bar Council Election on Climate Justice Manifesto

KARACHI,: In a remarkable and precedent-setting victory for environmental advocacy within Pakistan’s legal fraternity, Zubair Ahmed Abro, a leading environmental lawyer, has secured his seat in the Sindh Bar Council (SBC) — marking a historic moment where law and climate action have converged under the banner of “Lawyers Go Green.”

This election result reflects a growing recognition within Sindh’s legal community that climate change, environmental degradation, and unsustainable development are no longer peripheral issues — they lie at the heart of access to justice, human rights, and governance.

Throughout his campaign, Abro called on the legal fraternity to “see climate change not just as a scientific or political issue, but as a constitutional one — an issue of justice, equity, and the right to a healthy life.”

Abro’s victory has been hailed as a “green shift” in Sindh’s legal circles. Senior advocates and young lawyers alike rallied behind his message that environmental integrity must be embedded in legal integrity.

Supporters described his win as a mandate for reform, one that will empower lawyers to take a stronger stance on environmental governance and accountability.

“This victory is not just mine — it belongs to every lawyer who believes that justice includes our air, our water, and our climate,” Abro said after the results were announced. “The Sindh Bar Council must now become a voice for environmental protection and climate resilience.”

A graduate of Queen Mary University of London (LL.M. in Environmental Law), Abro has long been at the forefront of landmark environmental cases in Sindh — from industrial waste litigation to petitions on clean water and sanitation rights. His advocacy for climate-affected communities in Tharparkar and coastal Sindh has earned him both respect and recognition nationally and internationally.

As Sindh faces intensifying climate challenges — from water scarcity and rising sea levels to urban pollution and heatwaves — this victory represents a turning point. It signals that Pakistan’s legal institutions are beginning to embrace environmental accountability as a core principle of justice.

Zubair Ahmed Abro’s win is more than an election result — it is a call to action for every lawyer to go green.
