Flood-victims are living miserable life in Sindh

KARACHI: Million of people have been affected and crops over vast swathes inundated after breaches in several district of the province, poorly-desilted saline drains and choking of poorly-maintained drainage system.

According to reports the death toll in rain-related incidents soared to 1600 and 20000 injured in the different parts of the province. Thousands of cattle heads were either washed away or died because of non-availability of fodder and drugs.

Experts feared that negligence of the health department could cause spread of waterborne diseases because gutter water mixed with rainwater was stagnant on roads.

The rains caused breakdown of communication system and there was no electricity and gas in many parts of the villages in several districts.

A flood-like situation multiplied misery of people who were living under open sky, makeshift tents and government buildings.

Pathetic condition in Dadu, KN Shah, Khairpur, Sukkur, Badin, Jamshoro, Johi, multiplied the miseries of people where intermittent rains caused overflowing of saline drains and flooding of thousands of villages and union councils.

Villagers and the citizens of the said encroachments on saline drains caused flooding. The drains were not properly desilted, they complained.

At various places drains caused flooding because they were not desilted properly.

Prices of vegetables and other food items have increased in almost all rain-hit areas of the district. There was a shortage of pumping machines to drain out rainwater from the city.
Talking to reporters, Haji Noor Muhammad said that saline water drain near Shoukat Colony had developed breaches at several places, but district government failed in maintaining the cleanness in the area.
